Mouhameth “Mo” Thiam, a former Lane United FC attacker who led the University of Virginia to the third round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament in 2023 and led Oregon State University to the Elite Eight in 2021—earning All-America and All-Pac-12 honors along the way—has signed with Cascades FC, the club announced today. The signing is pending league and federation approval.
“I loved the culture while playing for Lane United in Eugene,” said Thiam. “It gave me a lot of excitement for the game. I’m excited to be part of what [head coach Darren Sawatzky] and [assistant coach Conner Cappelletti] are building.”
Thiam, a native of Dakar, Senegal, scored seven goals and added one assist for Lane United FC during the 2025 season. That came on the heels of a decorated collegiate career in which he scored 25 goals and added 20 assists for the University of Virginia, Oregon State University, and Radford University.
In 2023, he was named Top Drawer Soccer Second-Team All-American, All-ACC First Team, ACC Co-Midfielder of the Year, and United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-South Region after scoring five goals and leading the Cavaliers to the third round of the NCAA tournament. He was second on the team with 14 points, and his five goals included matchwinners against No. 11 Pitt and No. 10 North Carolina.
Prior to joining the University of Virginia, Thiam spent three years starring for Oregon State University. He was named to the All-Pac-12 First Team in 2022 after scoring a team-leading five goals in 17 starts; and in 2021 he led the No. 1-ranked Beavers to the Pac-12 title and the Elite Eight. He scored seven goals during the 2021 campaign, third-most in the Pac-12, and his scores included matchwinners against St. Johns and New Hampshire in the NCAA Tournament.
“Mo is a dynamic attacking player that can play in all front positions for us which allows us to attack in different ways,” said Sawatzky. “He was a very good player in two very good college programs, and he came to Eugene and scored a bunch of goals for Lane United. We know the Civic Park faithful will enjoy watching him run at defenders this spring.”
